Splashes

A Systematic Study of Splashes

A photographic study of water splashes above and below the water surface by three students--Scott Butson, Corey Hadley, and Stuart Pratt--at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics.  Information on their setup and experiment can be found on the website they created.

Water Splash Sequences

Inspired by the work of Butson, Hadley, and Pratt, Dahl Clark took a sequence of photos showing the various stages of water drop splashes.  From these photos, she created animations of splashes as viewed from above and below the water, and beneath the surface.

Multi-flash Milk Splashes

Drops and splashes of milk were illuminated with a timed sequence of four flash units, each filtered with a different color.

Water Splashes

A sequence of frames showing the evolution of a splash after a water drop falls into a container of water.  Unlike the above-and-below water splash photographs, these pictures were taken at an angle above the water's surface.

Drops

Water Drops in Short Falls

Drops of water fell a short distance onto a hard surface. This caused the  drops to deform without splashing upon contacting the surface.

Water Balloon Drops

The shapes assumed by water balloons when dropped onto a surface are very much like those seen for Martin's drops of water in short falls (as long as the balloon doesn't burst!)

Squish Ball Drops

Another collision situation similar to those above. In this case, a cloth-covered ball containing a squishy substance was used.

Racquetball Collisions

A racquetball deformed in colliding with a wall.

Related Drop and Splash Phenomena

Milk Strings

Milk drops were placed on a spring-loaded platform.  The platform was accelerated upward and then jerked downward.  This caused the milk drops to stretch into stringy shapes.

Soap Bubbles

Water was dropped onto a large soap bubble.  The collision had an interesting and unexpected result.

Potato Splashes

These pictures show potato pellets colliding with a hard surface, creating violent splashes.

Miscellaneous Splashes
